(Nelsonville, Ohio, June 13, 2023) – Last week, Hocking College's former Chairman of the Board of Directors, Tom Johnson, was presented with the esteemed Terry M. Thomas Friend of Community Colleges Award for 2023. This accolade, given by the Ohio Association of Community Colleges (OACC), recognizes Johnson's outstanding contributions and dedication to the community college system.
The Terry M. Thomas Friend of Community Colleges Award is a distinguished honor bestowed upon individuals who have demonstrated support, advocacy and allegiance to the advancement of community colleges in Ohio. It acknowledges their significant impact on student success, educational opportunities and community engagement.

Johnson has demonstrated a strong commitment to community colleges and the Appalachian region throughout his career. During his tenure as Chairman of the Board of Directors for Hocking College, he played a pivotal role in shaping the region's educational landscape. Additionally, his valuable service as a Board member of the Perry County Foundation, Co-Chair of the Perry County Access to Healthcare Working Group and Founding Director and Board member for Perry County Community Improvement Corporation and Land Utilization Corporation further highlights his impact on the community.
In addition to his roles within the education sector, Johnson has served as the Mayor of the Village of Somerset since 2009. Recognizing the importance of supporting and enhancing local resources, he has actively collaborated with local and state organizations, leveraging his expertise gained from a successful career in investment banking. Johnson's extensive involvement in development programs across southeastern Ohio has been instrumental in securing grants for education, healthcare, community development and other critical areas.
